Is your career a marriage killer? What about your spouse’s career?
While job satisfaction (or the lack thereof) can definitely affect your home life in either positive or negative ways, it seems like a bit of a stretch to say that some people are “destined to divorce” based on their careers — until you look at the statistics.
Do you work in a casino as a gaming manager or service worker? Are you a bartender? Is your spouse a flight attendant? If so, you have better than a 50% chance of ending up divorced. The excitement of those professions can make ordinary marital life seem dull by comparison.
Other professions that don’t fare much better include many kinds of factory machine setters, operators and tenders, telemarketers and telephone operators. In those cases, the sheer drudgery of the job can make workers unhappy — and that can also lead to marital strife.
On the other end of the spectrum, actuaries, various kinds of scientists and clergy members have the lowest rates of divorce — all under 20%. Clergy may have strong moral feelings about divorce that encourage them to make their marriages work, There’s every likelihood, however, that actuaries and scientists tend to have happier marriages because their jobs are both interesting and fulfilling — without necessarily being so exciting that they lose sight of the value of a stable home life.
In general, there’s probably no one factor that ultimately determines whether a couple’s marriage will survive in the long run. Every situation is unique.
